What’re The Surrounding Areas of Charleston, SC?

You may have heard of (or visited) downtown Charleston, but do you know the immediate areas surrounding the city? In upcoming videos we'll be going through each one of these in more detail, but to give you the jist…

..aside from downtown, the city of Charleston expands over and into what we call West AshleyWhy West Ashley? Because this area is west of the Ashley River - hence the name. This and many of Charleston’s other waterways play a significant role in the city’s development throughout time - but more on that later.

In addition to West Ashley; the city of Charleston also includes Daniel Island - this area is known as one of the Lowcountry’s most prized master planned communities.

Outside of the city limits to the East we have beautiful Mount PleasantThis is a thriving town that’s convenient to the peninsula, beaches, and all of the businesses & establishments in-between.

At some point you may have visited Shem Creek or Patriots Point, but you have likely passed through Mount P on your way to a couple of our favorite local beaches: Isle Of Palms and Sullivan's IslandYou may recognize Sullivan’s from the Netflix series Outer Banks. Sullivan’s is a bit quieter than IOP, but these are two picturesque beach towns.

To get to Charleston’s third beach you head South of downtown and onto James Island where you’ll eventually run into Folly BeachFolly is the local surf town and has fully embodied that persona, which makes it Debbie’s go-to. Taking a step back..we look at Charleston’s more rural towns: James Island and Johns Island. Both are known for their historic sites and vast plantations.
